In this course the student will learn the fundamentals of using ArcGIS Pro 3.x. To begin the class you’ll learn the fundamentals of using the new ribbon-based interface associated with ArcGIS Pro. Next, you’ll learn how to open projects and understand the variety of content types that can be added to a project including maps, layouts, styles, connections to data sources, and more. You’ll also learn how to create 2D maps and add a variety of basemaps and layers to those maps. We’ll also cover a wide variety of ways that layers can be symbolized and styled. Another topic we’ll cover is how to create and use selection sets associated with feature layers. You’ll also learn how to add stand-alone tables to maps and use the functionality found in the table view. Finally, we’ll cover how to create presentation quality layouts for your maps and content.

Prerequisite Requirements
Students need to have their own computer hardware with ArcGIS Pro 3.x installed.

Python is now regarded as one of the most popular programming languages of all, if not the most popular. This is especially true for GIS-related requirements, with Python being front and central when it comes to making the most of the ArcGIS technology suite. This workshop will provide an introduction to Python programming without reference to GIS topics, but with an emphasis on preparing attendees for further learning with respect to GIS scripting and development. The workshop will also be helpful for anyone wishing to use Python for other purposes.
Three topics will be covered in the workshop: (1) getting started with Python; (2) use of an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) (attendees may use either JetBrains PyCharm Community Edition or Microsoft Visual Studio Code (both free)); and (3) Python fundamentals, including functions, classes and objects, and error handling.

Intended Audience
Anyone wishing to learn the fundamentals of Python programming.

Prerequisite Requirements
There are no prerequisite requirements. It will be assumed that attendees have little experience with Python and are essentially starting from scratch.

Associated Workshop
Completion of this workshop is required for anyone wishing to attend the associated "Introduction to ArcGIS Pro Python Tools and Processes Development" workshop. An exception to this requirement will be made if the instructor is satisfied that your level of Python experience is such that attending the introductory workshop is not necessary. If required, please contact the instructor to request a waiver.

Format and Technical Requirements
The workshop will consist of a balance between lecture material and demonstrations, forming the basis for a flexible and interactive training approach. There will be plenty of time for discussion and experimentation, which will result in a rich and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Attendees must bring their own laptop.
Setup
Setup steps will be provided and must be completed prior to the workshop and attendees will be contacted to ensure that the required software is installed and that they can save workshop files onto their machine. Attendees are asked, therefore, to make sure they can be reached via the email address and phone number they used to register for the workshop.

The emerging technology of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) is enabling GIS professionals to acquire high quality aerial data of project sites in a timely fashion. The availability of lower cost drones, high-quality lightweight cameras, specialized sensors, and more user-friendly software is making it easier to deploy the technology and take advantage of the benefits. Attend this workshop and learn more about the UAS industry, using different types of drones for work, corresponding FAA regulations, and software such as Esri Site Scan for creating 2D and 3D data in a GIS environment. See firsthand what the data deliverables may consist of and how the data are used in mapping applications.

Intended Audience:
People interested in professional use of drones for remote sensing and geospatial applications within government, academic, or private commercial organizations. All levels of users welcome, though this will appeal most to beginner to intermediate UAS users.

The purpose of this collaboration session is to provide helpful guidance for anyone interested in developing tools and processes using Python with ArcGIS Pro. A brief overview of the ArcGIS Pro Python development options will be provided, followed by an explanation of a set of tools and scripts created to support the development of endangered species protection areas. This explanation will serve as a foundation for interactive discussion and demonstrations concerning a wide variety of topics, including high-level coding considerations, in-depth techniques, and things to watch out for in ArcGIS Pro. All session attendees will be welcome to contribute to the discussion and provide, for example, tips and tricks and perspectives based on their own ArcGIS Pro and Python development experience, the goal being to provide a forum for a beneficial exchange of ideas and inspiration. Coding is especially rewarding in many respects, but it can be tricky at times. It becomes less of a challenge, however, if we help each other as much as possible.

At the 2022 joint GIS-Pro and Northwest GIS conference, Jack Dangermond, the President of Esri concluded his keynote presentation by saying that "the central problem of our time is our lack of understanding and failure to collaborate, which is challenging our sustainability and threatening our future." This begs the question: What are we going to do about it? Given that the word "conference" means, among other things, "a meeting of two or more persons for discussing matters of common concern," does a typical conference presentation format support effective collaboration? One could argue that it doesn’t, at least not to a great enough extent. In this session, and in a complementary session focused on the lone GIS professional, we’ll try something different. Together, the participants will arrange the room to be conducive to collaboration; they’ll initiate discussion on topics that they feel are worth knowing about, taking something of an “anything goes” approach; and they’ll encourage helpful interaction. All participants will be expected to contribute to the proceedings at some point during the session, offering their own perspectives on a topic of someone else’s choosing or requesting a focus on something of interest. It may be chaos. Ideally, it will be very helpful. It’s worth trying alternative approaches like this, though. And if we make a mess of it this time, we’ll learn from what happened and keep trying on other occasions as we evolve to be better collaborators.

Providing safe, sustainable water, wastewater and stormwater solutions is a critical priority for community leaders, utility managers and a reasonable expectation of citizens. Many utilities rely solely on age based deterioration to forecast asset condition and replacement strategies. This session will discuss best business practices for incorporating risk and physical condition into your asset maintenance strategy. Risk is defined as Probability of Failure and Criticality of Failure. Maintenance workers can score their assets based on these risk factors to better understand potential impact to services provided. Furthermore, adding condition assessment based on physical deterioration of assets helps prioritize where the maintenance dollars should be spent.

Over the last couple of years the ORMAP Tools committee has developed a toolset for use by county cartographers to support tax map maintenance within the ArcPro/Fabric environment. Web Accessibility and the new MetroMap

Due to a recent Department of Justice (DOJ) ruling on web accessibility, most public-facing government web sites and content will have to be compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA standards by April 24, 2026. This technical specification includes rules regarding alt text, contrast levels, tab focus order, use of headers, captions for video/audio content, and much more. After the deadline, non-compliant governments will be liable to lawsuits for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Over the last year, Metro’s Data Resource Center has rebuilt its flagship GIS application, MetroMap, because the old version was dependent on deprecated technology. Even before we learned of the DOJ ruling, a key goal of this process was to make the website accessible to everyone, including those with vision challenges. This can be a big lift, so I’d like to share our lessons learned in hopes of helping other government GIS practitioners as they take on this work. I’ll also give a brief demo of the new MetroMap, highlighting its accessibility features.

"In 2020, Metro Council updated the multifamily regional service standard for garbage and recycling, introducing several changes aimed at making the system work better. One of these initiatives aimed to create more consistent and easier-to-understand signage in collection areas of apartments and condos across the region. But creating standard signs and decals to show what goes in which bin was just the start. One Metro team was tasked with making sure these decals and signs made it to the 6000+ apartments and condos throughout the region before December 2023.

To help with this undertaking, the Data Resource Center deployed a suite of ArcGIS Online applications, including Survey123, Dashboards, and Web App Builder, to support the project team. This presentation will cover how these technologies were implemented to serve the needs of a variety of different users, some of the challenges the team ran into, and how the workflow can be implemented in similar projects."

The Lone GIS Professional: Experiences, Challenges, and Requirements

At the 2008 Esri Developer Summit, the content was based on the assumption that most GIS professionals, especially developers, work in teams. From a rudimentary survey, however, it seemed that around half of the attendees worked on their own or were the only GIS expert in their organization. This was surprising to Esri, who, to their credit, adjusted their emphasis accordingly for future events. A few months later, a session focusing on the life of the lone GIS professional at the Washington GIS Conference attracted over a third of the attendees (around 70 people) who recognized that their experience working on their own or in small groups was a worthy basis for interaction at this and subsequent events. Eleven years on from the last session dedicated specifically to the world of the lone GIS professional, what, if anything, has changed? Is there still value in focusing on their situation in contrast to, for example, that of GIS professionals working in medium or large groups? The goal of this session is to address these and whatever other questions are of interest to lone GIS professionals. The approach will be the same as that for the complementary Things Worth Knowing session, which will involve adjusting the environment as required to facilitate healthy collaboration. As for that session, all participants will be expected to contribute to the proceedings at some point during the session.

HNTB’s Northwest GIS Team created custom Survey123 Field Forms to assess streams with regard to current site conditions, how best to divert the stream and exclude fish, and use Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Site Description Field forms. With Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) evaluated current stream, culvert and surrounding environment regarding fish exclusion and stream diversion for culvert replacement projects. Using Survey 123, standardized observations for WSDOT and for forms submitted to WDWF, and prepared template formats for standardized report exports. These forms provide a single-source to survey data, print standardized forms, and the web-first approach ensures the use of consistent results and formatted reports. This presentation describes the use of this workflow for ease of data review and how to use online-forms for web-first data analysis and reporting.

I was the City Engineering Technician from 2005-2023. I became the GIS Administrator in 2023 and am in charge of all GIS functions for the City of Mountain Home Idaho with a population of a little over 16,000. I have created a GIS database with over 6K Water meters, 94 miles of water lines, 1,800 Water Valves, 2,700 street signs, 1,500 sewer manholes, 82 miles of sewer lines and 87 miles of street data including signs and sidewalks, over 70 miles of walking/biking paths, City zoning data as well as the Area of Impact data.
By collecting and building the city-wide GIS database John has saved the city over $1M.
John has provided City crews with "online maps" and the system is being used by most every department in the city as well as City Council members.
Many times, we only hear of larger cities or organizations doing amazing things with GIS.
I would like to encourage smaller towns to take that next step and prove that you too have that "can do" spirit. No matter the size of the town you too can have interactive GIS data that is easy to read and follow.

The creation of a comprehensive and standardized parcel dataset is no easy task. Involving extensive collaboration and innovative solutions to overcome numerous challenges. This presentation will provide an overview of where Idaho is at in the development of this dataset and where we still have to go. This project is ongoing collecting data from counties throughout Idaho in different formats and update schedules. We have developed a standard for this dataset and leveraging different low-cost GIS solutions to aggregate this data at the state level. A major milestone for this project has been working with our local government entities and other state agencies to start publishing standardize data. Even though we do not have full state coverage, this is something we strive for and will continue working on. I will discuss the practical applications of the dataset, such as its impact on economic development, Trail Management and disaster management. Join me as we delve into the journey of developing the statewide parcel dataset, sharing valuable insights and lessons learned along the way so far. HNTB supports the Washington State Department of Transportation to design crossings for Fish Passage Improvement projects and create associated reports for specific passages. These specific reports for each passage, Preliminary and Final Hydraulic Designs (PHDs and FHDs), need field data collection and require consistent figures for project vicinity, watersheds and barriers, landcover, surficial geology, soil types and reference reach bankfull widths.

This presentation will focus on methods the HTNB GIS team used to assist data collection, access existing data, and create the required figures to support Fish Passage projects. A SharePoint cloud folder structure, ArcGIS Online (AGOL), ESRI Field Maps, ArcGIS Pro and REST service public data sources were all utilized to support this methodology.

Closing Keynote - Mapping Wildfire Hazard in Oregon: How Policy, Science and Data Shape Oregon’s Statewide Wildfire Hazard Map

In 2021, researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) were tasked by the state legislature to develop maps of the wildland-urban interface and wildfire risk. The maps will be used to support strategic statewide community wildfire risk reduction efforts. An initial wildfire hazard map was released in 2022 but was withdrawn under mounting opposition. Subsequently, in 2023, the legislature directed OSU to again make a map, this time calling it wildfire “hazard”. The wildfire hazard map is currently in development by OSU and other state agencies.
Andy will describe the hazard mapping process, including what was learned from the first mapping attempt and how it has informed updates in the current draft maps. In particular, he will describe why the change from “risk” to “hazard” is an important distinction, and how it reflects the intent of the map. The presentation will highlight wildfire hazard-related datasets and methods which might be useful to county- and state-level planners seeking to understand and plan for future wildfires.

Description
ArcGIS Pro is a powerful GIS desktop application in which great things can be accomplished using the out-of-the-box user interface options. Users can accomplish significantly more, however, and make the most of their ArcGIS investment, by using Python to perform GIS operations and streamline workflows. For this reason, Python experience is almost always a key consideration in GIS-related hiring decisions.
This workshop focuses on extending the capabilities of ArcGIS Pro via standalone scripts and tools that can operate within ArcGIS Pro or externally. Three topics will be covered: (1) An overview of using Python with ArcGIS Pro; (2) Developing and running Python scripts; and (3) Creating and using geoprocessing tools. For coding activities, attendees may use either of two Integrated Development Environment (IDE) programs: JetBrains PyCharm Community Edition or Microsoft Visual Studio Code (both free).

Intended Audience
GIS professionals familiar with ArcGIS Pro and Python and wishing to develop GIS tools and processes.

Prerequisite Requirement
Anyone wishing to attend this workshop must also attend the associated workshop, "Introduction to Python Programming." An exception to this requirement will be made if the instructor is satisfied that your level of Python experience is such that attending the introductory workshop is not necessary. If required, please contact the instructor to request a waiver.

Format and Technical Requirements
The workshop will consist of a balance between lecture material and demonstrations, which forms the basis for a flexible and interactive training approach. There will be plenty of time for discussion and experimentation, which will result in a rich and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Attendees must bring their own laptop.

Setup steps will be provided and must be completed prior to the workshop and attendees will be contacted to ensure that the required software is installed and that they can save workshop files onto their machine. Attendees are asked, therefore, to make sure they can be reached via the email address and phone number they used to register for the workshop.

Arcade is a response to a common problem. How do you display data when there is no column in the schema containing that data? Up until now, if the map layer you are working with did not have exactly the right attribute data you need, you had two choices: alter the underlying data or bring in the services of an application developer.
ArcGIS Arcade is an expression language with a simple scripting syntax that enables you to manipulate your existing data to generate new information based on it. While this sort of functionality has always been available in certain Esri products – most notably ArcGIS Desktop – the aim behind Arcade is to make it available everywhere in the ArcGIS platform, and for it to work identically in all environments.
You can almost think of Arcade as “Excel for ArcGIS”. In much the same way as Excel lets you write formula to work with spreadsheet data, Arcade lets you do the same with map data. In the initial release of Arcade, you can create and reference geometries. In future releases, other geometry functions may be added allowing you to calculate areas and lengths, and perform simple overlay operations in more complex expressions.
